Bengaluru’s Syed Saqib Ahmed, the overnight leader, wasn’t expected to have an easy ride to victory in Kochi on Saturday as it was still uncharted territory for him.
As it turned out, the 23-year-old did survive a few anxious moments towards the end of round four of the PGTI Cochin Masters presented by CIAL Golf Club before signing off with a gritty even-par-72 that helped him break into the winner’s circle on the PGTI.
Saqib triumphed by three shots as his total score read 10-under-278 at the Rs. 40 lakh event.

Bengaluru lad Syed Saqib Ahmed has done all the hard work for three days to get within striking distance of his maiden title at the PGTI Cochin Masters presented by CIAL Golf Club. The final round of the tournament will now be a test of the 23-year-old’s mental fortitude and finishing skills as he looks to drive home a four-shot advantage.
Saqib produced a rollercoaster one-under-71 on Friday to maintain his four-shot lead at 10-under-206 at the Rs. 40 lakh event.

Bengaluru’s Syed Saqib Ahmed hardly put a foot wrong during his second round of six-under-66 that helped him soar to the top of the leaderboard at the PGTI Cochin Masters presented by CIAL Golf Club. Saqib, whose round on Thursday featured a hole-in-one, totaled nine-under-135 at the halfway stage to lead by a massive four shots.
First round leader Amardip Sinh Malik of Noida dropped to second place after his round of even-par-72 took his total to five-under-139 at the Rs. 40 lakh event.

Noida’s Amardip Sinh Malik was the quickest off the blocks in the second event of the 2018 PGTI season, the PGTI Cochin Masters presented by CIAL Golf Club. Malik, a two-time winner on the PGTI, fired an exceptional five-under-67 in round one of the Rs. 40 lakh event on Wednesday to establish a one-shot lead.
Mumbai-based 21-year-old Akash Modi, playing only his second season as a professional, recorded a four-under-68 on the opening day to lie second.
