Kapur lies fifth in Thailand after opening round of 66
India’s Shiv Kapur celebrated his 33rd birthday by posting a six-under-66 to take fifth place at the Thailand Classic, an event co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
Michael Hoey of Northern Ireland was the leader at eight-under-64.
Despite nursing a cold, Kapur got off brightly with five birdies in his opening back-nine.
He added another birdie on the sixth before returning home comfortably in 66.
“It’s a nice present. You wake up in the morning hoping for a good day because you don’t want to be grumpy for the rest of the day. I couldn’t have asked for a better result.
“They keep saying beware of the sick golfer and it seems to work. Hopefully I can stay sick and keep playing the way I am,” laughed Kapur.
Anirban Lahiri was tied 20th at 69 wile Jyoti Randhawa and SSP Chowrasia shared 55th place at 71.
Arjun Atwal and Jeev Milkha Singh were joint 90th at 73 while Gangajeet Bhullar, Rashid Khan and Rahil Gangjee shot scores of 74 to be tied 113th.
