Randhawa shoots second straight 65 for a share of 16th at European Masters

India’s Jyoti Randhawa (72-65-65) returned a second straight five-under-65 in round three of the €2.3 million European Masters on Saturday. Randhawa was thus the best-placed Indian in tied 16th with a total of eight-under-202. He trails the leader Graeme Storm of England by eight strokes.

“I’m happy with the way I played. I putted well the last two days and made several birdies putts. Overall, I’m very happy,” said Randhawa.

Randhawa’s hopes of progressing into the weekend rounds were in grave danger when he carded a 72 to take a share of tied-111thplace after the opening round. However, the 42-year-old Indian, battled back with a 65 on the second day. The three-time Indian Open champion traded six birdies and one bogey in the penultimate round to come up with a second straight 65 at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

“I haven’t played a lot of golf in the last three months so it was like a practice round on the first day. You get a little edgy and I needed to figure out what I need to do in the second and third round. I’m glad I’m playing well now,” said Randhawa.

Randhawa holds the honour of being India’s first Asian number one in 2002.

After more than a decade, the seasoned campaigner is still displaying the same kind of form which has led him to eight Asian Tour titles throughout his illustrious career.

“I’m 42-years old and still enjoying my golf. In fact, my best golf is yet to come,” smiled Randhawa.

Meanwhile compatriot Anirban Lahiri had a promising start when he opened with an eagle-three on the first hole before adding a birdie on the fifth hole.

However a double-bogey six on 14 left his title hopes at the European Masters all but over as he could only post a 68 for a five-under-205 total that placed him tied 40th.

Rahil Gangjee had a day to forget after he mixed five bogeys against four birdies to sign for a 71. He was placed tied 77th at even-par-210.
