Shiv Kapur in tied 23rd after round three of US Open, on course for best finish by an Indian at the event
India’s Shiv Kapur (73-70-71) put up another spirited performance at the US Open by signing a card of one-over-71 in the third round on Saturday. Shiv mixed his card with six bogeys and five birdies to take his three-day total to four-over-214. Kapur’s third round performance placed him tied 23rd, 12 shots behind the runaway leader Martin Kaymer of Germany.
The 32-year-old Kapur, making his US Open debut, is now on course for the best-ever finish by an Indian at the second Major of the year. Jeev Milkha Singh currently holds the record for the best result by an Indian at the US Open thanks to his tied 36th finish at the 2007 edition of the tournament. Jeev also holds the record for the best finish by an Indian at any Major as a result of his tied ninth place at the 2008 PGA Championship.
Shiv, who holds three international titles including one on the Asian Tour, had a poor start to the day as he bogeyed the first two holes. He then hit a purple patch with four birdies between the fourth and the ninth. The Delhi golfer however, ran into rough weather once again as he dropped four shots over the next seven holes. Kapur pulled one back with a birdie on the closing 18th. He thus ended up gaining 10 spots from his overnight tied 33rd.
Kapur is currently the highest-placed Asian at Pinehurst No. 2 along with Hideki Matsuyama of Japan who is also in tied 23rd.
