Shubhankar Sharma fires third round 70 at The Open, continues to be in contention

Shubhankar Sharma (68-71-70) kept himself in contention going into the last day of the 151st Open Championship after he posted a hard-fought one-under 70 in the third round at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club that took his tournament tally to four-under 209.

Sharma, who was overnight tied fourth, dropped five spots to tied ninth but managed keep himself in the mix. While Shubhankar trails the leader Brian Harman of the United States (12-under 201) by eight shots, the Indian is just three shots adrift of second-placed Cameron Young (seven-under 206), another American.

Spaniard Jon Rahm's 63 set the record for the lowest round in an Open Championship at Royal Liverpool to surge into third place at six-under 207).

Shubhankar, currently ranked 276th in the world, made an eagle on the fifth and a bogey on the 16th along with 16 steady pars to stay in the hunt.

Sharma's eagle on the par-5 fifth came as a result of a 36-feet conversion after he found the green in two shots. His bogey on the par-4 16th was a dampener where he missed the green and the up and down for par.

He missed a 17-feet birdie on the 17th and then recovered well from the rough to make a par on the 18th.

Shubhankar is now in line for a few records as the best Indian finish at a Major is Anirban Lahiri's tied fifth place achieved at the PGA Championship in 2015 while the best Indian finish at The Open is Jyoti Randhawa's tied 27th place at the 2004 edition.
