Big gains for Indians in Austria, SSP moves into tied fifth, Shubhankar in tied 20th, Ajeetesh too makes the cut

Indian star golfer SSP Chawrasia (72-68) moved into tied fifth position at a total of four-under-140 after posting a four-under-68 in round two of the European Tour’s Austrian Golf Open at Atzenbrugg.

SSP, a four-time European Tour winner, still searching for his first win on European soil, thus climbed 26 spots from his overnight tied 31st position. The two-time Indian Open champion trailed the leader Alejandro Canizares of Spain by three shots.

Chawrasia, yet to register a European Tour win outside India, made birdies on three of his first four holes followed by a bogey on the ninth. SSP added two more birdies on the back-nine. He birdied three of the four par-5s in round two.

In an interview with the European Tour, SSP said, “It was about three degrees yesterday but it was a bit warmer today which suited me. The ball went longer due to the weather today and that too helped me. Today, I started from the first tee and the early birdie on the par-5 first hole lifted my confidence. I also made some good putts early on. I’m now just looking to do my best in the two remaining rounds.”

Shubhankar Sharma (75-68) also shot a 68 on Friday to move into tied 20th place at a total of one-under-143. Sharma thus made a gain of 51 spots from his overnight tied 71st place.

Shubhankar managed five birdies on the first 11 holes before dropping his only bogey of the day on the par-5 15th.

Ajeetesh Sandhu (77-70), the third Indian in the field, also made the cut. Ajeetesh made the cut on the line with his total of three-over-147. He was placed tied 60th.
