Lahiri in the mix at Travelers Championship, rises to tied third after a shooting 65 in Round 3, lies five off the lead
Anirban Lahiri made his move in round three of the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship with a fiery five-under-65 that propelled him from overnight tied 11th to tied third.
Lahiri (67-67-65), the 2015 Asia No. 1, totaled 11-under-199 after the penultimate round to trail the leader, Englishman Paul Casey, by five shots at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.
Interestingly, it was at last year’s Travelers Championship that Anirban had achieved his lowest score of 63 on the PGA Tour.
Lahiri, currently ranked 112 in the world, began the day on a high with a 19 feet birdie conversion on the first. However, that effort was cancelled out as a result of his three-putt bogey on the next hole.
The two-time European Tour winner, seeking to become the second Indian after Arjun Atwal to win on the PGA Tour and in the United States, was a revelation on the back-nine as he conjured an eagle and three birdies to throw his hat in the ring.
Anirban, whose career-best finish on the PGA Tour was a tied second at last year’s The Memorial Tournament, displayed some outstanding iron-play as he set up a tap-in birdie on the 11th and an equally close eagle putt on the 13th.
Lahiri then drove the par-4 15th green and two-putted for birdie. Finally, a 12-feet birdie conversion on the 16th saw Anirban end the day with a five-under.
Lahiri, who has two top-10s to his credit in the current PGA Tour season, is now in a good position to improve on his FedEx Cup ranking of 111.
Anirban, looking forward to his first win on the PGA Tour, said, “Well, it's obviously one of my goals. It's something I set out to do when I moved base here 2 1/2 years ago. When it comes, it comes. I've got to keep doing what I'm doing, and if I keep moving in the right direction, it will come sooner rather than later.”
