Atwal tied fourth on day one of Maybank Championship
Bhullar in tied 10th
India’s Arjun Atwal fired a five-under-67 to be tied fourth on day one of the weather-disrupted US$3 million Maybank Championship, an event co-santioned by the European & Asian Tours. Atwal trailed the clubhouse leader Chris Paisley of England by two strokes.
Gaganjeet Bhullar was the other Indian in the top-10 at the Saujana Golf and Country Club as he returned a 68 to be tied 10th.
The round could not be completed on Thursday as there was a suspension of 1 hour and 50 minutes due to lightning. Fading light forced officials to stop play at 7.30 pm local time. A total of 40 players will return at 7.50 am on Friday to complete round one.
Arjun Atwal, a former Asian Tour number one who is aiming for a third victory in Malaysia, traded seven birdies against two bogeys on Thursday.
Arjun, who won Malaysia’s National Open in 2003 and 2008, said, “It was hot, very hot. I don’t remember the last time being this hot. I’m pleased, it was a solid start to round one. Everything was pretty okay, I can’t pinpoint which part of my game was better. Everything was solid, I hit a lot of fairways and greens. I hit it close a few times and made some putts so it was good. It has been a while since I won in Malaysia but I always love coming back here. It has been fun.”
Gaganjeet Bhullar made six birdies and two bogeys during his round of 68.
SSP Chawrasia was the next best Indian in tied 26th with a round of 69.
