Anirban Lahiri shoots 68 to be tied 28th in round three; Udayan Mane in tied 55th
India’s Anirban Lahiri shot a three-under-68 in round three of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics men’s golf event to be placed tied 28th at a total score of six-under-207 at the Kasumigaseki Country Club on Saturday.
Lahiri (67-72-68) was lying tied 20th at a four-under total after completing 16 holes in round two when play was suspended due to bad weather on Friday. Anirban then came out this morning and ended his second round with a score of 72 to be placed tied 24th with his total reading three-under-139. The former Asia No. 1 was eight off the lead at that stage.
In the third round, Lahiri had an early bogey for the third day in succession as he dropped a stroke on the first hole. The two-time European Tour winner then roared back with a birdie on the seventh followed by an eagle on the par-5 eighth to move his day’s total to two-under. Anirban had a quiet back-nine picking up a lone birdie on the 14th besides his eight pars. He thus dropped four spots in round three.
Lahiri is eight shots behind third round leader Xander Schauffelle (68-63-68) of USA who has a three-day tally of 14-under-199. Local favourite Hideki Matsuyama of Japan occupies second place at 13-under-200 while Great Britain’s Paul Casey and Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz are tied third at matching totals of 12-under-201.
India’s Udayan Mane (76-69-70) mixed four birdies and three bogeys during his third round of one-under-70 to move up one spot to tied 55th place at a total of two-over-215.
Korean Sungjae Im equalled the Olympic record score of eight-under-63 to climb 35 spots to tied 17th at seven-under-206. The record set by American Matt Kuchar and Australian Marcus Fraser during the 2016 Rio Games was also matched earlier this week by Austrian Sepp Straka in round one and American Xander Schauffele in round two.
